Silly Kissers are Edmonton and New Brunswick ex-pats living in Montreal, penning infectious 80s pop melodies, putting on wickedly danceable live shows, and in general, perfectly recapturing the absurd innocence of your first crush. Last summer when GOBBLE was on tour we probably jammed their old banger “Stethoscope” 30 times, so doing a remix was a no-brainer. Inspiration for this particular one fell like lightning from heaven one night at the Sub-Mission Art Space, during volume 1 of Strange Dogs, the radtastic new bimonthly fringe showcase curated by blistering shoegaze/post-punk champs and SF pals Weekend. The homie Alejandro (aka Psychic Handbook) was killing it with a DJ set of wacky electronics, and between obtuse chiptune squelches and gauzed-out grooves, he dropped Lone Wolf’s edit of Alice Deejay off the former’s rad (+free) mixtape, Nightwind. I’ve enjoyed chopped and screwed stuff for a while, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard a straight-up 90s trance synth-fest given the treatment. The result was staggering for me: I could practically see the oompa loompas lumbering up the stairs. In retrospect it makes perfect sense: the over-the-top syncopated synths of ravey trance are perfectly suited to carrying a groove along, and the maximal production style means there’s more than enough notes to go around - even at 60 bpm. The upshot of all of this is that I abandoned my original plan to make Sweet Adrian an off-kilter banger. Instead, I prepped percussive elements as though I was going to do a minimal tech-house remix, arranged, and then dropped all that ornamentation by about 40 bpm overall (to 90).
