REMIX NOTES:
I have been a Sean Nicholas Savage fan since his early days as frontman of Edmonton band End Credits. Sean writes perfect pop music: simple, but not easy; effortless, but passionate and arresting; and most of all, completely infectious without being insidious. Doing the remix reminded me of why I love his music: “Baby It’s You” had sunk its claws into me, and seemed to be a straightforward pop anthem from his last album Sunshine Melodies/Weird Daze (Arbutus Records). The hook in the song is so strong that it didn’t occur to me until I started cutting up the stems that it is actually a) in 7/4, and b) at 170 bpm. Believe it or not, I had originally intended to do a noisy house remix: instead, I decided to explore its original tempo and time, and it turned out as what it is - weird, busy, silly, and more than a little nostalgic for an era for which it is not yet hip to be nostalgic. It’s not a great pop song like the original anymore, but watching pop get cut into tiny, gory pieces in a sadist’s bathtub is fun too.
